This program aims to provide comprehensive support to Black LGBTQI+ immigrants throughout the intricate processes of filing for asylum and work permits (pro se). We accompany individuals to their USCIS Interviews and EOIR Court Proceedings, ensuring they navigate these proceedings with confidence and clarity.

We recognize the challenges immigrants face in accessing social services, especially in a bustling city like New York, we provide direct support to help them navigate the complexities of the city. This includes guidance on accessing essential social services tailored to their needs and facilitating referrals for legal support when necessary. By addressing these multifaceted needs, our program endeavors to empower Black LGBTQI+ immigrants, ensuring they receive the necessary support to navigate their legal journey successfully.

The primary objective of this initiative is to safeguard the rights of both Black LGBQI+ immigrants who find themselves detained within immigration centers.

We are dedicated to advocating for their release from detention facilities, ensuring that their immigration proceedings continue in environments that are both humane and secure, free from the harsh conditions often associated with detention facilities.

Recognizing the often prolonged and arduous nature of the immigration process, we offer various forms of support to those affected. One such form of support is our Pen Pal program, through which individuals can correspond with volunteers outside of the detention center. This allows detainees to maintain connections with the outside world and receive messages of encouragement and solidarity, reminding them that they are not alone in their struggle.

Furthermore, we facilitate Video Visits, providing detainees with the opportunity to virtually connect with loved ones and supporters. These visits serve as a lifeline, offering emotional support and reassurance during what can be an isolating and challenging period of waiting.

In essence, our program aims to provide practical assistance and emotional support to detained Black LGBQI+ immigrants, ensuring that they feel supported and empowered.

Our Community Impact Program is designed to uplift Black LGBTQI+ immigrants who have been released from immigration detention or are at risk of entering the system. Our primary aim is to empower these individuals through education about their rights, emphasizing the importance of discerning when to assert those rights and when to exercise caution. We provide support to help navigate complex immigration processes and offer resources that promote self-advocacy and resilience.

Furthermore, we are committed to advocating against policies that are unfriendly to immigrants by fostering community unity through various channels such as online activism, dissemination of printed materials, and strategic collaboration with allied organizations. Through these efforts, we strive to create a supportive and informed environment for individuals navigating immigration, ensuring that they are aware of their rights and have access to the resources they need.

TGNC Connect

TGNC Connect is a dedicated initiative within our Community Impact Program, focused on enhancing the visibility, well-being, and rights of trans, non-binary, and gender non-conforming individuals. Our mission is to create a supportive and empowering environment that facilitates access to vital resources, promotes equal treatment, and advocates for systemic change. We offer various services, including:

  • Referral Services: Guidance on legal name change processes and referrals to legal experts specializing in gender marker and name change procedures.

  • Mental Health Support: Access to mental health professionals knowledgeable in trans-specific issues, along with referrals to culturally competent therapists and counselors.

  • Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) Support: Information and referrals to HRT providers, and assistance with navigating healthcare systems to obtain HRT.

  • Support Group & Educational Resources: Access to peer support groups and educational workshops on trans health, rights, and empowerment.

  • HIV Prevention and Sexual Health: Resources for HIV prevention, including PrEP, and referrals to sexual health clinics offering inclusive care.

  • Advocacy Efforts: Advocacy for equal and fair treatment in healthcare, employment, housing, and other essential services. We engage in public awareness campaigns to combat transphobia, promote understanding of trans issues, and collaborate with community organizations and policymakers to advance trans rights.
